Police in El Paso, Texas says actor Sherman Hemsley died at his home in El Paso.
The circumstances behind his death are not known. Hemsley played hot-tempered dry cleaning business owner George Jefferson on the 1970s sitcom “The Jeffersons.” The iconic character originated on Norman Lear’s “All In The Family” on which Hemsley, as Jefferson, played foil to his equally opinionated and bigoted neighbor Archie Bunker.
“The Jeffersons” aired on CBS from 1975 to 1985. Isabel Sanford, who played Hemsley’s wife Louise, “Weezy” Jefferson, passed away in 2004. "
