Local Air Fares Hit Record High
" ATLANTA (AJC/ WAOK) – Both locally and nationally fliers are paying more than ever for domestic trips. Atlanta domestic air fare specifically has reached a record high.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics, Atlanta air fare is up 8.9 percent year-over-year with a current average price of $392.29.

The local average is higher than the national average domestic fare of $372.75.

The first quarter of 2012 was the second consecutive quarter of record fares.

Southwest, among many other airlines, has long been trying to increase fares and revenue while simultaneously working to maintain a low-fare image.

According to Southwest spokesman Brad Hawkins, the primary effect Southwest has had so far in lowing domestic fares is bringing down costly last-minute fares.

Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines also has been working towards increasing its revenue. Delta chief executive Richard Anderson said in a conference call this week on financial results that they aim to have the company’s fares directly reflect its expenses. "
