Herman J Russell and Gov Carl Sanders Remembered For Contributions To The Civil Rights Movement
" Two Georgians are being remembered for their contributions during the Civil Rights Movement. Congressman John Lewis says Atlanta businessman and philanthropist Herman J. Russell was a source of inspiration for those involved in the movement.” Lewis says former Georgia Governor Carl Sanders “must be looked upon as one of the new governors of the south.” According to the Atlanta Representative, Sanders helped bring down the signs at the Georgia State Capitol that said whites and coloreds , “he helped desegrate the University of Georgia”, adds Lewis.

Russell was born in 1931 in Atlanta’s Summerhill community. He went on to create H. J. Russell and Company, an influential construction and property management company in Atlanta. Congressman Lewis calling Russell, “one of a kind, a pioneer, one of the most distinguished African-American businessmen. One of the most distinguished Georgians.” Russell died on Saturday, November 15. He was 83 "
